Scale Back Alabama kicks off January 9
1/11/2017
FOLEY, AL (January 9, 2017) - Beginning January 11, local residents are invited to sign up in teams of two for a statewide weight-loss contest called Scale Back Alabama. Alabama has the 6th highest rate of obesity among adults of any state in the country. Now in its eleventh year, the purpose of Scale Back Alabama’s 10-week contest is to help our state fight its challenge with obesity by encouraging Alabamians to lose weight, to exercise and to have fun while doing it.
During 2016, over 21,000 individuals participated in Scale Back Alabama, and more than 76,000 pounds were lost. The statewide weight-loss competition has resulted in more than one million pounds lost since its beginning, and it continues to be a great way to start the New Year by motivating Alabamians to eat less and move more.
“The new year is a perfect time to think about establishing good habits that will make you healthier,” said Steve Wright, Cardiac Rehab Manager for South Baldwin Regional Medical Center. “All you have to do to participate in Scale Back Alabama is find a teammate and come to South Baldwin Regional Medical Center Cardiac Rehab Center Thursday, January 12 or Friday, January 13 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. or Tuesday, January 17 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. to weigh and register. There is no charge to participate in the program and there are cash prize drawings at the end.”
According to Wright, the goal is to lose a pound a week during the 10-week period. “We’re really encouraging healthy weight loss, not crash dieting.” Throughout the contest, participants will be provided with tips such as how to eat healthier portions and how to make exercise a part of their normal routine.
The contest is geared toward adults age 18 and older, and additional information on the times and locations for all public weigh-in sites is listed on the Scale Back Alabama website, www.scalebackalabama.com.
Scale Back Alabama is a public awareness campaign hosted by Alabama‘s hospitals and the Alabama Department of Public Health, with generous support from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. For more information, visit www.scalebackalabama.com.
