Innovative Robotic Technology Allows Surgeons to Personalize Total Knee, Partial Knee and Total Hip Replacement Procedures to Each Patient
(Foley, AL – April 11, 2018) – Robotic-guided total knee, partial knee and total hip replacement technology has arrived in Baldwin County, and South Baldwin Regional Medical Center is proud to be the first health care provider to make this procedure available in our community. This latest advancement in joint replacement surgery is transforming the way joint replacement procedures are performed.
The total knee application is a knee replacement treatment option designed to relieve the pain caused by joint degeneration due to osteoarthritis. Through CT-based 3D modeling of bone anatomy, surgeons can use the robotic technology to create a personalized surgical plan and identify the implant size, orientation and alignment based on each patient’s unique anatomy. The robotic technology also enables surgeons to virtually modify the surgical plan intra-operatively and assists the surgeon in executing bone resections.
The partial knee application is a treatment option for adults living with early to mid-stage osteoarthritis that has not yet progressed to all three compartments of the knee. It is less invasive than traditional total knee surgery.
The total hip application is a treatment option for adults who suffer from degenerative joint disease of the hip. Orthopaedic surgeons can now fit artificial hip joints into the socket more precisely and less invasively using this technology, and more precision reduces the potential for complications.

Gregory Terral, M.D., board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specially trained with this technique. “Using a virtual 3D model, I am able to create each patient’s surgical plan pre-operatively before entering the operating room. During surgery, I then can validate that plan and make any necessary adjustments while guiding the robotic-arm to execute that plan. It’s exciting to be able to offer this transformative technology across the joint replacement service line to perform total hip and partial knee replacements.”
