FOLEY, Ala. [October 7, 2026] Baldwin Health announced today the dedication of a special permanent memorial in the medical intensive care unit (MICU) waiting room to honor the life, extraordinary career and enduring legacy of Donald "Donnie" Gray, R.N., who served as a critical care nurse at the hospital for over 20 years.
For more than two decades, Donnie stood on the frontlines of intensive care during the most critical moments of his patients' lives. To his colleagues, Donnie was far more than a teammate; he was family. Known for bringing an unforgettable blend of deep compassion, unwavering strength, humor and grace into every shift, he left an undeniable mark on every patient, family and healthcare professional he encountered.
Donnie famously lived and practiced nursing by a personal mantra: "Six more hours, a lifetime of impact." This perspective guided his approach to critical care, serving as a constant reminder that even a single shift, or just six more hours, could fundamentally change the course of a patient’s recovery and comfort a family in distress.
To ensure his spirit and contributions continue to inspire all who walk through the hospital's doors, a framed portrait and memorial plaque honoring Donnie will hang permanently in the MICU waiting room. The dedication aims to provide a quiet haven of comfort for families during difficult moments, offering a reminder of the kindness, excellence and warmth Donnie embodied throughout his long career.
"Donnie brought a rare light to our hospital floor, and his presence was a steady anchor for all of us. Critical care nursing demands deep clinical knowledge, but even more than that, it demands heart. Donnie had a unique gift for bringing peace and humor to the highest stress situations, making patients feel safe and his team feel like family. Hanging his portrait in our MICU waiting room ensures that his legacy of compassion will continue to comfort families when they need it most," said Carly Millsap, ICU director at Baldwin Health.
The memorial portrait and plaque are now officially installed in the MICU waiting room at Baldwin Health, where patients, visitors and hospital staff are invited to pause, remember and reflect on an extraordinary life dedicated to serving others.
